milgramVIEUX-MONTRÉAL, QUÉBEC, CANADA
Founded in 1950, this family-owned customs brokerage and transportation business recently decided to relocate its offices to the heart of Old Montréal. They chose a brick building, near the port, which is roughly the same age as their company. The building has interior spaces reminiscent of the holds of a ship. Its massive wood beams and columns, wood-panelled ceilings with exposed systems, and exposed-brick walls are strong reminders of the port's industrial and maritime heritage. The complexity of the site, combined with the client’s expectations, engendered a new way of working in an open plan, of spreading employees out on a single level rather than four storeys. The importance of being able to create visual links between them required a central space that facilitates communication where everyone enjoys the benefit of natural light.
