Station No. 1

HOCHELAGA-MAISONNEUVE, MONTRÉAL, QUÉBEC

The Coopérative d’habitation Station No. 1 is built from the shell of an old Shawinigan Water and Power Company power station. The co-op has 76 affordable and environmentally friendly apartments for individuals, couples and families. This sustainably designed project, created through a Société d’habitation du Québec program and sponsored by the social economy enterprise Bâtir son quartier, features two additions to either side of the original building's central section, resulting in a balanced blend of new and recycled elements. The longitudinal structure and walls are preserved, and a bridge crane hangs over the exterior courtyard, harkening back to the building’s industrial past. From simple studios to five-bedroom apartments, all units look out onto the surrounding greenery. The two additions extending along Station No. 1’s profile reuse old bricks from the partial demolition of the original power station.
